A Tribute to Austin Street Art

One of the greatest things about Austin is it’s grounded identity in being artistic and eclectic. Murals are found on street corners and hidden in alleyways with new ones always popping up. It’s a city of street artists galore and home to one of the most unique places, an outdoor gallery that fosters both amateur and professional street artists.

After a mis-engineered condominium construction project was abandoned, layers of concrete slabs were left open in plain sight. What began as a temporary art exhibit during SXSW in 2011 that featured a mural by world renowned artist, Shepard Fairey, it quickly grew into a permanent outdoor art park known as the HOPE Outdoor Gallery. The thing that fascinates me most about cities is that they’re always changing. To no surprise, with it’s prime location and great view of the city skyline, the iconic art park is moving. Though it’s sad to see this landmark become another development amongst other condos, it’s lived a full cycle. Graffiti in itself is temporary and so too is the park dedicated for it.

The new location is set to be a six acre park near Austin Bergstrom International Airport at Carson Creek Ranch.

Though this graffiti park will no longer be at it’s prime location, there is still plenty of outside art to enjoy. Murals around this city pop up in unexpected places – sides of restaurants and stores, down alleyways, and on the exterior walls of high-rises. Keep your eyes peeled as you’re exploring the city as street art is bound to pop up anywhere!

Greetings From Austini love you so much
